Pemaquid Watershed Association (PWA) offers the semi-annual midwinter bird seed sale featuring the best seed varieties, including different types of sunflower seeds and thistle seed. Almost all the year-round songbirds in Maine eat sunflower seeds, including the chickadee, nuthatch, tufted titmouse, cardinal, and bluejay. Thistle seed, also known as Niger seed, is eagerly consumed by all the small finches, pine siskins, and redpolls. Also available is a Melody Mix which is a mixture of sunflower seeds, peanuts, cracked corn and white millet. When the cold winter wind blows, backyard birds love to peck at high energy suet cakes.
Order forms can be obtained by contacting the PWA office at 563-2196, email@example.com, or stopping by weekdays to the PWA office at 584 Maine Street, Damariscotta, across from Young’Uns. Order forms also can be downloaded from the PWA website pemaquidwatershed.org. Ordering deadline is Thursday, January 26, and the pickup day is Saturday, February 11, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Lincoln County Publishing, which is on Mills Road in Newcastle near the post office. 100% of the proceeds from the bird seed sale will benefit Pemaquid Watershed Association, a volunteer-based, membership-supported non-profit organization that has been conserving the natural resources of the Pemaquid peninsula region since 1966.
