The Pemaquid Watershed Association PWA Paddlers is offering a choice of either salt or fresh water paddles on Saturday July 25, at 10 AM.
The destination of the salt water paddle is a stretch of the Damariscotta River above the Fort Island narrows. The paddle will take us from Clarks Cove to Peter’s Island, Plummer Point and to Hodgsons Island, where we will stop to stretch, explore and have an optional picnic lunch (bring your own). Advisory: Possible strong river currents. Directions: From Damariscotta at the Baptist Church, head down Route 129 about 3 miles and bear right at the fork staying on 129. Go about 4 miles turning right onto Clarks Cove Road just past the golf course. Travel about a mile until after climbing a short pitch and taking a sharp left turn watching for a large Federal style house on your right. Just beyond, turn right to the launch site. The trip duration is approx. 3 hours and there is no public rest room. The paddle leaders will be Peter Lawrence and Diane Gilman.
The fresh water paddle will be at Dyer Long Pond in Jefferson. Directions: From Newcastle take Route 215 North past the intersection of Atkins & Weeks Roads. Continue on Route 215 for a short distance to Hinks Road; veer right. Follow Hinks to the carry-in launch site. The paddle duration is 2 hours and there is no public rest room. The paddle leader will be Jean Smith.
All paddles are free and open to the public. Paddlers must supply their own kayak or canoe, wear a life jacket and bring or have on file a standard release form which is available at PWA’s website or from the paddle leader. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The paddles will be canceled in the event of rain, fog or small craft warnings. For the entire 2015 schedule, please visit the PWA site at www.pemaquidwatershed.org/water/pwa-paddlers/ or contact Peter Lawrence at 563-3104 or email@example.com.
