The Pemaquid Watershed Association PWA Paddlers is offering a choice of either salt or fresh water paddles on Sunday (note not usual day), July 5, at 10 AM. Paddlers should arrive 20 minutes prior to launch.
The destination of the salt water paddle is Little (Outer) Thrumcap Island in South Bristol. Advisory: This trip involves open ocean paddling. Directions: From Damariscotta take Routes 129/130 south for approx. 3 miles. Route 129 will split off to the right at Hanley’s Market/Gas Station. Follow Route 129 into South Bristol. Just after the Harborside Market and before going downhill into the village, turn left onto Thompson Inn Road. The newly constructed public boat launch (not Sand Hill Cove as in the past) will be our put in on your right just before the Fisherman’s Co-op. Park at the launch site, but if it is crowded on the holiday weekend, we can use the school parking lot and shuttle from there. The duration of the paddle will be 3 1/2 hours including picnic lunch on the Island (bring your own) and there is a public rest facility at the South Bristol launch site. Peter Lawrence and Diane Gilman will be leading this paddle.
The fresh-water paddle will be on Damariscotta Lake in Jefferson. Directions: From Damariscotta take Route 1 North to East Pond Road in Nobleboro (just a short distance past the Nobleboro Town Hall/Fire Station); turn left. Follow East Pond Road 8.7 miles to its intersection with Route 32; turn left. Follow Route 32, 1.8 miles to the Damariscotta Lake Water Association (DLWA) sign and entrance; drive down to the water. The paddle duration will be 2 hour; no public rest facility; optional lunch at Damariscotta Lake Farm restaurant. Jean Smith will be the paddle leader.
All paddles are free and open to the public. Paddlers must supply their own kayak or canoe, wear a life jacket and bring, or have on file, a standard release form which is available at PWA’s website or from the paddle leader. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The paddle will be cancelled in the event of rain.
