2009 PWA Paddlers Retrospective

You always know it was a good paddle season when several paddlers voice disappointment when they ask about the next scheduled paddle and are told they just participated in the last of the season. This is what happened at the end of the paddle and picnic to Dodge Point on 9/26. We were very fortunate this year that only one of the twelve scheduled paddles was cancelled in spite of our rather erratic spring and summer weather. We started off by rescheduling the 5/30 Nequasset Brook paddle in Woolwich to 6/6 due to rain but had a very serene paddle during which we saw a multitude of great blue herons and finished off the paddle with a fun lunch at the Montsweag Roadhouse. The next paddle on Megunticook Lake in Camden, one of the group’s all time favorites, did not let us down and we ended the paddle with lunch at the Camden Dinner. Our 6/27 paddle was from Wiscasset Harbor down the Back River to the Narrows and back via Fort Edgecomb with lunch at Le Garage Restaurant. On 7/11 we paddled out of East Boothbay on Linekin Bay near Bayville to Cabbage Island with lunch subsequently at the Lobsterman’s Wharf Restaurant. By now I bet you area getting the idea we enjoy the camaraderie of a good lunch almost as much as the paddle itself. The next paddle, on 7/25, was from Round Pond to Indian Island with a picnic lunch on Louds Island as part of the Native American Recognition Celebration. No we didn’t find Chief Samoset’s grave, but we had a good time. The 8/8 paddle, Sponsored by the Boothbay Region Land Trust, was from West Boothbay Harbor to Spectacle Island with a picnic lunch on the Island. Our 8/19 paddle, with a picnic on the Preserve, was to the Karl F. Berger Preserve on Bremen Long Island, from Carol Ransom’s residence in Bremen. Another of our most favorite paddles occurred on 9/5 when we put in at Hatchet Cove in Friendship and lunched at the Narrows Tavern in Waldoboro. Our next to the last paddle, and one of our most beautiful, was on Lake St. George in Liberty, which we paddled on 9/12 with lunch at a local restaurant. All in all, our paddle season was truly rewarding, with a great variety of participants and interesting venues complete with lots of natural beauty. Hope to see many of you on the water with me next year.
