PADDLES: BETHEL POINT AREA & DYER RIVER

The Pemaquid Watershed Association PWA Paddlers is offering a choice of either salt or fresh water paddles on Saturday August 29, at 10 AM. Please arrive 20 minutes prior to the launch time.

The destination of the salt water paddle is the Bethel Point area in Brunswick. Be advised this trip involves moderate, sheltered ocean paddling. Directions: From Damariscotta, take Route 1 South getting off at Cooks Corner in Brunswick and follow Route 24 south 4 miles toward Cundy’s Harbor. Turn left onto Cundy’s Harbor Road continuing for 3 miles, then right onto Bethel Point Road 1 1/2 miles to the end. Drop off your kayak and gear close to the boat ramp and double back to the Bethel Point Boat Yard you passed coming in to park ($5.00 fee). The duration of the paddle will be 2 hours; rest rooms at the boat yard; optional lunch at a restaurant in Cundy’s Harbor. Peter Lawrence & Diane Gilman will be the paddle leaders.

The fresh-water paddle will be on the Dyer River at Sheepscot Village. Directions: From Newcastle take Route 1 South to the Sheepscot Road on your right and follow it to the 4 corners intersection (the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association (SVCA) office will be on your left and the Sheepscot Community Recreational Area on your right).Make a left turn and go a very short distance to the Grange Hall on your right before the bridge. Leave your kayak and gear there and go back and park at SVCA or the rec area. The paddle duration will be 2 hours and there is no public rest room. Jean Smith will be the paddle leader.

All paddles are free and open to the public. All paddlers must supply their own kayak or canoe, wear a life jacket and have on file, or bring, a standard release form which is available at PWA’s website or from the paddle leader. Children under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The paddle will be canceled in the event of rain, fog, thunder activity or small craft warnings.
