PWA to Paddle to Hermit Island & Boyd Pond
At 10 a.m., Saturday, June 4, The Pemaquid Watershed Association (PWA) will paddle to Hermit Island in Phippsburg. This paddle involves ocean paddling. At the same time on Wednesday, June 8, PWA will paddle the Pemaquid River to Boyd Pond. Participants are asked to arrive 20 minutes prior to the start of each paddle.
Directions for the Hermit Island paddle: From Damariscotta travel Route 1 South over the Bath Bridge and take an immediate left onto Route 209 toward Phippsburg. Cross the Winnegance Bridge and proceed 9.8 miles passing the post office, Bisson’s Center Store & the elementary school. After about 8.7 miles, Route 209 will turn left toward Popham Beach but continue straight onto Route 216 pass Morse’s Mountain. Alliquippa Road will be on your right; drive to the end to a small parking lot and a public dock where we will put-in. No rest rooms; optional lunch at the Lobster House.
Directions to Boyd Pond/Pemaquid River: From Damariscotta take Route 130 to Bristol Mills. Go left onto Lower Round Pond Road and follow it to the Hatchtown Bridge (just past Sproul Road). Parking is along the roadside; no rest rooms.
All paddles are free and open to the public. Paddlers must provide their own kayak or canoe and wear a life jacket. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are responsible for their own safety and should determine in advance if conditions and destinations are suitable for their skill level. All paddlers must have a written release on file with PWA or complete one at the time of the paddle. Releases may be obtained at the PWA web site, pemaquidwatershed.org or from the paddle leader. Paddles will be canceled due to inclement weather.
