This Saturday, July 4, at around 3:50 p.m. (rain or shine), the Damariscotta River will be overtaken by over 600 little yellow rubber duckies eager to win first place in Pemaquid Watershed Association’s 11th Annual Rubber Ducky River Race. The gargantuan gaggle of grin-eliciting quackers will be launched 1/10 mile up-river of the Damariscotta-Newcastle bridge by Ducky Fleet Admiral (aka Chief Quack), Peter Lawrence, and his launch crew. A team of Ducky Retrieval Specialists aboard watercraft will be waiting at the finish line to gather up all the bright yellow racers. Best view for the race is the finish line, which is the Damariscotta/Newcastle bridge. Spectators should gather for a 3:50 p.m. launch time but should be prepared with patience, as the launch is contingent on the turning of the tide and may be up to 30 minutes later than expected. Live ducky-related music at the bridge by Jan Marie Bacon will entertain spectators as they await the start of the race. “Pemaquacky,” PWA’s 4-foot-tall foam duck, will serve as Pace Ducky for the race. The crowd is encouraged to sport bright yellow attire and all things ‘ducky’ to add to the playfulness of this light-hearted event. Check the PWA web site for updates in launch time as the event nears www.pemaquidwatershed.org.
Each ducky is numbered, and each ticket sold corresponds to one ducky entry in the race. Tickets are 1 for $5.00 or $25.00 for a ‘6-Quack’ and are on sale at the PWA office (above Salt Bay Café in Damariscotta), at Yellowfront Grocery, at the Round Pond parade, and at the Damariscotta-Newcastle bridge on race day. Prizes will be awarded for the top 10 finishers, selected by the winners in order of finish. A special Pokey Ducky Prize will be bestowed to the last place finisher. Prizes are $100 cash courtesy of Yellowfront Grocery; a Midcoast Kayak 2-person Explorer Tour of Muscongus Bay ($120 Value); a PWA sweatshirt courtesy of William H. Brewer, C.P.A.
